Tonga College ‘Atele has been claimed the 2026 Tongatapu Secondary Schools Senior Rugby Championship after staging a second-half comeback to defeat Tupou College Toloa 22-17 in a thrilling final at Teufaiva Stadium on Friday.
The victory ends Tupou College’s four-year hold on the senior title and marks Tonga College’s first championship in more than a decade. The final drew strong support from students, families and alumni, reflecting the long-standing rivalry between two of Tonga’s leading rugby schools.
Tupou College built pressure through disciplined defence and took advantage of scoring opportunities to hold the advantage at half-time before withstanding a strong fightback from Tonga College after the break. The five-point margin ensured an intense finish as both teams battled until the final whistle.
Tonga College’s success extended well beyond the senior grade contesting for the Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4 and Grade 5 championship matches in addition to the Under-18 senior decider, proving the depth of its rugby programme.
Liahona High School also enjoyed a strong campaign facing four of the championship fixtures, while Tupou College Toloa reached two grand finals, including the senior title match. ‘Apifo’ou College fought for the Grade 3 trophy.
The result reshapes the recent honours list in Tongatapu secondary schools rugby. Tupou College won six consecutive senior titles from 2015 to 2020 before Takuilau College claimed the 2021 championship. Tupou College then reclaimed the trophy and defended it from 2022 to 2025, making Tonga College’s 2026 triumph a significant breakthrough.
Secondary school rugby remains one of Tonga’s most closely followed sporting competitions, with matches serving as an important pathway for players aspiring to provincial, national and international honours. Many former students from both Tonga College and Tupou College have gone on to represent Tonga at senior level, underlining the significance of the annual championship.
For Tonga College, Friday’s victory represents a return to the top after more than a decade, while Tupou College will look to regroup as preparations begin for next season’s campaign.
