Could electricity rates rise again in Tajikistan?

Tajikistan’s Antimonopoly Service has not ruled out further electricity tariff revisions as fuel prices and other power-generation costs continue to change.

However, the agency told Asia-Plus that it has not yet received an official request from the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources to raise tariffs again in 2026 or 2027.

The Antimonopoly Service said the latest increase was driven by the expenses of energy companies and the need for them to meet their financial obligations.

The decision to raise tariffs for all consumer categories was approved by the Government of Tajikistan.

According to the agency, the main reasons for revising the tariffs included energy companies’ loan obligations, higher wages for industry workers, rising production costs, increased prices for spare parts and equipment, and other operating expenses.

Until 2016, electricity tariffs in Tajikistan were generally raised only in even-numbered years. They subsequently began increasing annually.

The only exceptions were 2020 and 2021, when the government suspended tariff increases because of the economic difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
