The community of Mayom Angok Boma in Aweil North County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, South Sudan, has demanded the construction of a road, school, and police station before Lol Malual Mining Company begins gold mining operations in the area.
They raised the demands during a meeting in Mayom Angok involving community members, government officials, company representatives, traditional leaders, women, and youth representatives.
Residents said the construction of key infrastructure should come before mining activities, citing the need for improved access, education services, and security in the area.
Acting Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Dr. Tong Lual Ayat, said the visit aimed to engage the community and discuss plans for the company’s mining activities.
“The gold was discovered in Mayom Angok Payam in 2025. The company conducted all the necessary tests and confirmed the presence of commercially viable gold deposits, and we have decided to come and discuss with the community and the company. Dr. Tong said.
Representing Lol Malual Mining Company, Lual Deng Lual said the company had agreed to construct a school, road, and police station as part of its commitment to the community before fully starting mining operations.
He thanked the state government and the people of Mayom Angok for welcoming the company, saying the project would create employment opportunities for local youth and reduce the number of young people traveling to Khor Kaltan in search of mining work.
The Deputy Paramount Chief of Majak Baai, Manang Jiel Jiel, said the community and state authorities had agreed to allow Lol Malual Mining Company to operate in Mayom Angok after reaching a mutual understanding.
Mayom Angok Payam youth representative Diing Deng urged young people from Aweil currently working in Khor Kaltan to return home and seek employment opportunities expected from the new mining project.
He said mining activities are expected to begin in July, describing the project as a major economic opportunity for Mayom Angok and surrounding communities.
