The Deputy Mayor for Environment at the Juba City Council has warned that individuals found illegally dumping garbage will face arrest, saying waste management is a shared responsibility between residents and the city authorities.

Speaking during a clean-up campaign in Juba’s Nyakuron Residential Area, Stephen Lomude said the council regularly collects garbage and clears roads, but some residents continue to dump waste indiscriminately before blaming the authorities for poor sanitation.

“We want to send a message that garbage management is everyone’s responsibility, not the City Council alone. We collect garbage and clear the roads, but after we leave, some residents dump waste again and accuse the government of not doing its work,” he said.

“Anyone found dumping waste will be arrested and action will be taken. The mayor has directed us to ensure deployment, and from today we will do that,” he added.

Lomude said the council would no longer tolerate improper waste disposal and announced plans to deploy personnel to enforce the city’s sanitation regulations.

He urged residents to play their part in keeping Juba clean, saying maintaining a healthy environment requires cooperation between the public and the city authorities.
