Brown-Burke tells public officials that intense scrutiny accompanies high office

Member of Parliament for South West St. Andrew, Dr. Angela Brown-Burke, is reminding parliamentarians and public officials that they have a higher duty to integrity than private citizens.

Dr. Brown-Burke was speaking during Thursday’s meeting of the Integrity Commission Oversight Committee, where some government MPs raised concerns over the depth of scrutiny often imposed by the anti-corruption body.

However, Dr. Brown-Burke says public officials should similarly be expected to better adhere to the law.

Daina Davy tells us more.

Chairman of the Integrity Commission Oversight Committee, Pearnel Charles Junior, on Thursday gave an impassioned plea that the committee guard against what he calls the potential of prosecution turning into persecution as it relates to the work of the anti-corruption body.

While appreciative of the position adopted by the Chairman, Member of Parliament for South West St. Andrew, Dr. Angela Brown-Burke, reminded her fellow representatives that they should expect greater scrutiny due to the privileged position they hold.

Dr. Brown Burke says many reports from the Commission lay bare the need for significant improvements in the government administration.

She says accountability must be expected both from the Integrity Commission and the public sector.
