Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed at the start of the war
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) — The coffin of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei arrived Wednesday in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad ahead of burial at the Imam Reza Shrine following funeral services in the Iraqi holy towns of Najaf and Karbala.
The arrival in Mashhad marks the culmination of the funeral procession for Khamenei after days of ceremonies in Iran and Iraq with the participation of top political and religious dignitaries.
Earlier this week, Khamenei’s remains were flown to Iraq, where Iraqi authorities held rites in the two holiest towns in Shia Islam, Najaf and Karbala.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian attended the Najaf celebrations.
Following the procession in Iraq, the casket was taken to Iran to be buried at Mashhad, Khamenei’s hometown and the shrine of Imam Reza.
