Harry Kane’s brace saved England from World Cup humiliation as Thomas Tuchel’s men survived an almighty scare against the DR Congo to set up a mouth-watering clash with co-hosts Mexico.

A decade on from the embarrassing Euros exit to Iceland, history threatened to repeat itself as Brian Cipenga’s early strike meant they faced the prospect of falling at the first knockout hurdle to unfancied opposition.

England stumbled for large periods and struggled to beat inspired DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, but Tuchel’s side kept their cool – and at times rode their luck – as Kane’s second-half double completed a 2-1 comeback win in the round of 32.

Meanwhile, Youri Tielemans scored from the penalty spot in stoppage time of extra time, and Belgium came back from two goals down to beat Senegal 3-2.

Tielemans was fouled just before the end of the 30 minutes of extra time were finished and the referee awarded the penalty after a video review.

The final match wills see USA taking on Bosnia.
