Venezuela earthquake toll rises to 2,295 dead and over 11,000 injured

AKIPRESS.COM – The death toll from the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela has reached 2,295 people, with another 11,300 injured, according to National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodríguez.

12,800 citizens are currently staying in temporary accommodation centers.

In memory of the victims, the Venezuelan government has declared a seven-day national period of mourning beginning July 1.

The crisis began on June 24 when two major earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck the country. In the days following the initial disaster, a total of 782 aftershocks were recorded.

Extensive destruction has been reported in the capital city of Caracas, as well as across the states of Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo, Lara, and Yaracuy.

The coastal city of La Guaira suffered the most severe damage, with at least 100 buildings completely leveled to the ground.
