Portland driver charged after hitting 11-year-old on a bicycle

A Portland man was allegedly using a cellphone Monday night when he hit a child riding a bicycle.

Beder Hussein, 19, was charged with operating after suspension and driving to endanger, according to Brad Nadeau, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department.

Hussein was driving near the intersection of Brighton Avenue and St. John Street and Devonshire Street about 8:49 p.m. when he hit the 11-year-old as the child crossed the road on a bicycle, Nadeau said Tuesday morning.

The child was treated at the scene for a minor leg injury.

Hussein, who had a green light, reportedly confirmed to police that he was talking on a cellphone before the crash, and officers later learned that his license was suspended, according to Nadeau.

The investigation is ongoing.

Correction: Earlier information provided by police misstated where the crash happened.
