Iraq stands with Qatar after Ras Laffan explosion

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Foreign Ministry expressed on Monday Iraq’s solidarity with Qatar following the explosion at the Ras Laffan industrial area.

In a statement, the ministry confirmed Iraq’s complete support for the Qatari government and people during this difficult moment, wishing the injured a speedy recovery, according to the state-run news agency (INA).

The Iraqi ministry voiced trust in Qatar’s capacity to deal with the aftermath of the disaster promptly and effectively, praising the efforts made to save lives and keep important infrastructure secure.

On Sunday evening, a horrific industrial explosion took place at Qatar’s Barzan local gas supply facility in the Ras Laffan industrial area, killing 13 workers and injuring 66 others.

According to Qatar’s Ministry of Interior, the explosion was caused by an internal technical fault during operational activities.

In a press conference held on Monday in Doha, Energy Minister Saad al-Kaabi stated that the 66 injured were from Qatar as well as a number of African and Asian countries.

The Barzan plant is critical to Qatar’s internal infrastructure, with the potential to provide 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of pipeline gas per day to the power plants and water desalination companies.

QatarEnergy, the state-owned energy company, said that the primary liquefied natural gas (LNG) export infrastructure was unaffected, assuring no interruption to worldwide shipments.
