$3.4b in major upgrades underway through CAPEX

The government is moving ahead with major urban infrastructure upgrades under its Capital Expenditure Programme, CAPEX, with an estimated $3.4 billion in planned investments.

This is aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving utility infrastructure, and supporting future growth.

Works Minister, Robert Morgan, made the disclosure during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives earlier this week.

He reported that the dualisation of Grange Lane in Portmore was now substantially complete and already delivering relief to motorists and commuters.

The widening of Braeton Road and Hellshire Main Road has reached about forty percent completion.

Mister Morgan said the works were critical as Portmore prepared to become Jamaica’s fifteenth parish, stressing that infrastructure had to keep pace with the area’s population growth, commercial expansion, and public transportation needs.

The Minister also announced that two further road improvement projects had completed the tender opening process.

The widening of Arthur Wint Drive, which includes potable water and sewage infrastructure works, is estimated at two-point-two-one billion dollars.

He added that the projects formed part of a coordinated national agenda that also included the SPARK Programme, the Montego Bay Perimeter Road, the Southern Coastal Highway Improvement Project, and the Port Antonio Bypass.
