Albuquerque City Council rejects raising gross receipts tax

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque city councilors rejected a proposed gross receipts tax increase in a 5 to 4 vote.

The proposal would have raised the city’s gross receipts tax by nearly half a percent. The vote also means Albuquerque voters will not see the proposed tax increase on the November ballot.

Right now a $100 purchase now adds about $7.63 in tax. Under the proposed increase, that same purchase would have added about $8.11 in tax.

During Monday’s council meeting, opponents argued any tax increase would be difficult for residents.
