FAO Holds Session in Sebha to Promote Groundwater Conservation and Protect Water Reserves

Sabha – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) held a workshop in Sabha focused on rationalizing groundwater use and limiting depletion of water resources in southern Libya. The session was part of the Marwat 2 project, an extension and enhancement of Marwat 1, and was organized in cooperation with local and international partners in the agriculture and water sectors.

The workshop targeted engineers, farmers, owners of farms participating in the Ghadwa agricultural project, and specialists in agriculture and water. Participants discussed ways to use modern irrigation techniques to boost agricultural productivity while reducing groundwater consumption and promoting sustainability in desert areas.

Experts from FAO, the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science, and representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources delivered a series of scientific lectures. The session featured detailed presentations on the latest techniques for managing water and improving agricultural efficiency.

The event concluded with a field visit to the Abu Aisha and Tarhuna projects, which are part of the Great Man-Made River Authority at Jabal al-Hasawna al-Jafara. Participants observed practical applications of modern water-saving technologies and stressed the importance of expanding these practices to protect water resources in southern Libya.
