AKIPRESS.COM – Regular tea consumption reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, several types of cancer, and age-related memory decline, according to a study published in the journal Beverage Plant Research by specialists from the Tea Research Institute at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

However, the form in which it is consumed matters immensely, as bottled teas and bubble teas can completely negate these health benefits.

The primary advantages of traditional tea stem from polyphenols—specifically catechins, which are particularly abundant in green tea. These compounds help lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and support weight management. Multiple large-scale cohort studies demonstrate that people who drink tea regularly have lower mortality rates from cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers.

Furthermore, scientists highlight two unexpected effects: tea slows down cognitive decline in older adults while reducing markers of Alzheimer’s disease, and catechins help preserve muscle mass in old age, thereby maintaining physical strength and activity.

The health benefits vanish when it comes to bottled teas and trendy bubble teas, which frequently contain sugar, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives. The authors of the review emphasize that such additives can neutralize or significantly diminish the beverage’s therapeutic properties.

Additional reasons for caution include the potential presence of trace pesticides, heavy metals, and microplastics in tea products. While this poses no serious threat with moderate intake, it remains an open question for those who consume large quantities daily. Tea interferes with the absorption of iron and calcium, which is a particularly important consideration for vegetarians. Ultimately, freshly brewed tea serves as a simple and accessible tool for boosting health, whereas bottled versions and sugary tea drinks are best enjoyed moderately.
