Agartala: A court in Tripura’s Khowai district has summoned several senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, Rajya Sabha MP Dola Sen and party leader Kunal Ghosh, in connection with a case registered during the party’s political activities in the state in 2021.
Public Prosecutor of Khowai District Court Abhijit Bhattacharjee said the case stems from an incident that occurred after police arrested 14 TMC workers in Khowai and produced them before a court.
According to the prosecution, a group of TMC leaders and supporters allegedly engaged in misconduct with police personnel during the episode. The allegations also include an attempt to damage property at Khowai Police Station.
Bhattacharjee said a case was registered by police and subsequently placed before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Khowai. After examining the case records, the court took cognisance of the matter and initiated proceedings against the accused persons.
He said former West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, who was also named in the case, challenged the proceedings before the High Court and was later discharged.
“The remaining accused persons will face legal proceedings in accordance with law,” the prosecutor said.
According to court records, summons were issued in April this year directing the accused to appear before the Khowai District Court.
The court has fixed June 22 for their personal appearance, Bhattacharjee said.
The case relates to developments during the Trinamool Congress’s efforts to strengthen its political presence in Tripura ahead of subsequent electoral contests. Several senior leaders of the party had visited the state during that period and participated in organisational programmes.
There was no immediate reaction from Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen, Kunal Ghosh or the Trinamool Congress regarding the court summons.
