U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for the possibility of direct talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling such a meeting a positive step toward resolving the conflict.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump commented on an open letter recently published by Zelensky and addressed to the Russian leader, in which the Ukrainian president called for direct dialogue and proposed a personal meeting to discuss ending the war.
“I’m glad they may be talking about a meeting. I think we are largely responsible for this. It would be great if they met. They should do it,” Trump told journalists.
The U.S. president also said that any potential settlement would require compromises from both sides.
“Both sides will have to make concessions,” Trump said, adding that such a process is unavoidable in efforts to reach a negotiated solution.
Earlier, Zelensky published an open letter to Putin urging him to move toward direct negotiations and seek an end to the war. In the letter, the Ukrainian leader addressed issues including the human cost of the conflict, the responsibility of Russia’s leadership for the war, and the prospects for continued international support for Ukraine.
The proposal for direct talks comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a path toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
