stated that the institution has a moral and ethical obligation to ensure the runoff election process to be held on Sunday, June 7.
During an informational briefing for international observers of Peru’s electoral process, the ONPE head mentioned that more than 27 million voters will cast ballots next Sunday, both in Peru and abroad.
“This Sunday, June 7, we have the moral, legal, and ethical obligation to successfully carry out this runoff election with the two candidates who are running,” Pachas expressed.
“For that reason, we at ONPE have prepared ourselves after everything that happened (in the first round),” he added.
The ONPE chief expressed confidence that the runoff election will be a peaceful democratic celebration.
He added that citizens will have both the confidence and the civic duty to vote for the candidate of their choice.
Pachas noted that communication ties within the electoral system have been strengthened to enable a coordinated institutional presence at various events.
Similarly, he underscored the close coordination with the Peruvian National Police and the Armed Forces.
The ONPE chief said voters will cast their ballots next Sunday at 10,536 polling places, 10,313 of which are located in Peru and 223 abroad.
He mentioned that a total of 92,766 polling tables are scheduled to be set up, with 2,543 located abroad and 90,223 in Peru.
Pachas acknowledged that, because polling places are not always available—except for those coordinated with the Ministry of Education—they are subject to relocation or rotation for various reasons, including climatic factors.
“As a result, 161,640 voters assigned to 549 polling tables across 44 polling places were reassigned,” he stated, indicating that polling places previously set up in open parks were also relocated.
At another point, the ONPE head recalled that 28 million ballots had been printed, adding that electoral materials had been distributed nationwide and abroad.
He stressed that the final stage of the distribution process will take place on Friday, June 5, at 10:00 p.m. in Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao region.
He explained that, following a meeting with Popular Force and Together for Peru parties, it was agreed to “photograph only the vote count,” not polling station members, and not to conduct live broadcasts.
