Guwahati: The Government of Assam formally tabled the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the Assam Legislative Assembly, shortly after receiving Cabinet approval earlier this month.
The legislation, titled “The Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026,” was introduced in the House by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the ongoing session.
The Bill is scheduled for detailed debate and possible passage on May 27, according to the legislative calendar.
The draft had been cleared by the state Cabinet on May 13 at its first meeting following the formation of the Chief Minister’s second term, held at the State Guest House in Koinadhara, Guwahati.
Chief Minister Sarma had earlier confirmed that the proposal would be brought before the House during the current Assembly session, which began on May 21 and is set to conclude on May 26.
As per the provisions outlined by the government, the proposed law will not apply to Scheduled Tribes (Hill) and Scheduled Tribes (Plain). It also exempts customary religious practices, traditions, and rituals from its scope.
The draft framework focuses on select civil matters, including setting a uniform minimum marriage age, banning polygamy, ensuring equal inheritance rights for daughters, and regulating live-in relationships.
The introduction of the Bill marks a major step by the state government towards establishing a standardized civil law framework for specific family and social issues in Assam.
