Agartala: The Tripura High Court on Tuesday sought a response from the state government regarding the measures taken to fill vacant posts earmarked for visually impaired candidates across various departments.
The government has been directed to present its stand through a separate affidavit, advocate Samarjit Bhattacharjee said.
The observation came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation filed by the All Tripura Blind Association. According to Bhattacharjee, the petition, filed in 2022, highlighted several difficulties faced by persons with visual disabilities in the state.
The plea alleged that students were not being provided with adequate Braille books and that no Braille press had yet been established in Tripura.
It also raised concerns over the failure to fill vacancies reserved for visually impaired job seekers and the absence of a permanent full-time commissioner.
During the hearing, the state government informed the court that although a Braille press has not yet been established, the distribution of Braille books has started.
It also assured the bench that a proposal for the appointment of a full-time commissioner would be placed before the cabinet and implemented within the next four months.
The division bench of Chief Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit directed the government to file a detailed affidavit on the steps initiated to fill the reserved vacancies for visually impaired aspirants.
The matter will next be heard in July 2026.
