Uttarakhand: Heavy Rain Alert for May 12-13

The weather patterns in Uttarakhand are constantly shifting. Recent rainfall and snowfall have brought a distinct chill to the air, keeping the weather at the hill stations pleasant. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for May 12 and 13, anticipating heavy rainfall in various parts of the state—particularly in the mountainous regions. Following this rain alert, Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey has appealed to devotees and tourists undertaking the Char Dham Yatra to ensure they obtain the latest weather updates during their journey and to plan their travel with the utmost caution.

Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey urged devotees to exercise extra vigilance when scheduling their travel plans for May 12 and 13, given the sensitive nature of the prevailing weather conditions. If possible, he suggested that it would be more advisable to undertake the journey once the weather returns to normal. Furthermore, he advised travelers to strictly adhere to the guidelines issued by the administration and local authorities throughout their journey to ensure a safe and pleasant experience.

He stated that the state government remains fully committed to making the Char Dham Yatra smooth, safe, and well-organized, and has issued directives to all concerned departments to ensure that necessary preparations and arrangements are in place. He expressed confidence that, with the cooperation and vigilance of the devotees, the Char Dham Yatra would conclude successfully and without any disruptions.

It is worth noting that the Dehradun Meteorological Centre has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms at several locations across the state today—specifically in the districts of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli, as well as in select areas of other hill districts. Additionally, snowfall has been forecast for regions situated at altitudes of 4,500 meters and above. In the plains districts of Uttarakhand, there is a possibility of isolated light rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. The forecast also indicates a likelihood of lightning strikes accompanied by thunder in scattered areas across the hill districts. Furthermore, strong gusty winds (speeding at 40–50 km/h) are expected, for which a ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued.

Notably, Uttarakhand is currently witnessing a massive influx of devotees participating in the Char Dham Yatra. Rain could disrupt the pilgrims’ journey, as rainfall frequently triggers landslides and debris falls along the Char Dham pilgrimage routes. Consequently, travelers are often compelled to wait for the routes to reopen before they can proceed further. Pilgrims resume their journey only after the paths have been cleared. Under such circumstances, even the slightest negligence could prove fatal. To effectively handle this situation, the administration has stationed personnel at various halts along the route to ensure that travelers do not face any undue hardships.
