Feral pig management intervention findings presented in Samoa

The research findings, achievements and challenges from Samoa’s feral pig management intervention were presented at the Tanoa Hotel Conference Room on 5 May 2026.

The keynote address was delivered by Fuimaono Maiava Tito Asafo, who said the programme was carried out through collaboration with the Australian Government through the Market Development Facility, with support from the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, district communities and the private sector.

The event was attended by Reverend Kirisimasi Sani, New Zealand High Commissioner Her Excellency Mrs Si’alei von Toor, Australian High Commissioner His Excellency Mr Will Robinson, members of the diplomatic corps, Cabinet Ministers, Government officials, stakeholders, farmers and village representatives.

Fuimaono said feral pigs continue to create serious problems for farmers, damaging crops, disturbing plantations, affecting irrigation systems and destroying months of work within days.

He said the impact has caused financial losses and added pressure on farming communities already facing challenges.

By addressing the issue directly, he said the Government has taken an important step to protect livelihoods and strengthen Samoa’s agricultural sector.

Fuimaono acknowledged the role of development partners, Government agencies, communities and the private sector in supporting the initiative.

He also thanked district representatives, farmers and stakeholders for their contribution to the programme.

He said continued collaboration among partners would be important as Samoa moves forward with the next interventions.
