Maine cannot have effective public safety if members of our communities are afraid to seek help. Earlier this month, LD 1259, legislation that would have clearly separated local law enforcement from federal immigration enforcement, received an “ought not to pass” recommendation.

While the bill has failed, the concerns it addressed remain. When individuals fear that calling the police could lead to detention or deportation, crimes go unreported and communities become less safe. This is not just an immigrant issue; it is a public safety issue that affects all of us.

Policies like LD 1259 aim to ensure that local law enforcement can focus on protecting and serving their communities, rather than enforcing federal immigration priorities. Even though this bill will not advance, Maine lawmakers should continue pursuing solutions that build trust, reduce fear and strengthen community safety for everyone.
