People in Story County with unwanted prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and more now have two new drug drop boxes they can use. The Story County Sheriff’s Office placed prescription drug drop boxes at two county buildings to give residents a safe way to dispose of unwanted medications. One box is inside the main entryways of the Story County Justice Center, and the other is inside the Story County Administration Building. They are free to use and are available during normal business hours. The program focuses on helping people properly and safely get rid of expired or unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications, with the goal of keeping them out of the hands of children and others. Accepted items include prescription drugs, prescription patches, prescription samples, pet medications and over-the-counter medications, including vitamins. A sharps container is also attached to the receptacle for the disposal of syringes.Items that cannot be dropped off include aerosol cans, inhalers, prescription ointments, biohazardous or infectious waste, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, thermometers, food items or supplements.The Story County Sheriff’s Office said it will not accept items from commercial entities for destruction.
