MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – A major redevelopment plan for Mount Pleasant Towne Centre is moving forward, aiming to bring housing, office space, green space, and family entertainment to the popular shopping destination.

The town’s planning commission voted this week to approve the 2025 master plan, which would allow up to 421 residential units, more than 87,000 square feet of office space, and 188 hotel rooms. The project would roll out in phases and only move forward if anchor tenants like Belk or Regal Palmetto Grande vacate.

Mayor Will Haynie said the goal is to create a more livable, long-term community space.

“You get one shot to redevelop something like this,” said Haynie. “We’ve shown that we are taking our time. What we want is a more livable community … mixed use, attainable housing, and more green space.”

The plan includes requirements for at least 60,000 square feet of family-focused entertainment, like an ice rink or trampoline park, and a commitment that 25% of any new housing would be designated “attainable.”

Haynie also stressed that no new housing will be approved until school zoning is addressed by Charleston County School District.

“We are not going to allow anything that’s going to cause overcrowding at their schools,” he said.

But some longtime Mount Pleasant residents are pushing back.

“We’ve lived here 13 years. My daughter meets her friends here, we go to the movies, the restaurants, the bookstore,” said Mount Pleasant resident, Jessica Jones. “I think this would drastically change the Town Centre we love.”

The plan now heads to Mount Pleasant Town Council for a first reading on July 8.
