John Roberson Flanagan
Kiawah Island – John Roberson Flanagan, age 78, of Kiawah Island, SC, passed away on July 10, 2026 at Well More Home, Daniel Island, SC, where he was cared for with dignity and kindness.
John was born on April 24, 1948 in Greenville, NC, the son of Travis Hooker Flanagan and Sarah Roberson Flanagan. John married Tricia Flanagan on December 18, 1994, and they shared an admirable, devoted, loving partnership.
John attended East Carolina University and worked as a Real Estate Broker in both North and South Carolina. He was respected for his client-centered professionalism. During his high school years, John was admired for his athletic accomplishments as a football/baseball star and was revered for his team spirit. Enjoying time with his wife and friends, John especially loved coastal boat trips as well as offshore sailing in his 54′ Tsunami Bristol Yacht. John held memberships in Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Charleston Yacht Club, Kiawah Island Club, and The Governor’s Club.
All through life, beginning as a small boy, John always had a deep affection for dogs. He shared a special bond with Sailor and Tiller; truly a man’s best friend. As an avid duck hunter and golfer, John could often be found enjoying an afternoon on the Lowcountry landscape. He will be remembered most for his hallmark qualities – his kind, gentle soul, how he loved, how he showed up, and how he made people feel important. Known for his signature Southern charm and impeccable sense of style, he believed in dressing well, treating others with respect, and making everyone feel welcome.
He is survived by his spouse, Tricia Flanagan of Kiawah Island, SC; his sister Jane Flanagan Cipau of Raleigh, NC; his sisters-in-law Ro Dunn (and her husband, Charlie Dunn) of Kiawah Island, SC, and Kathleen Cuneo (and her husband, Steven Cuneo) of Marlton, NJ. He is also survived by twenty-nine nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly and knew him affectionately as “Uncle John.” John also shared a special lifelong friendship with Bubba and his wife, Barbara Rawl, a bond that spanned more than fifty years.
He was preceded in death by his parents Travis and Sarah Flanagan; his parents-in-law Lawrence E. and Susanne D. McDermott; his brothers Travis Flanagan and Chetwynd Flanagan; his sister-in-law Bridy Nocito.
To celebrate John’s life, Msgr. Chris DiLella will officiate the Mass of Christian Burial to be held on August 28, 2026 at 12 noon at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The interment will follow immediately at the Holy Spirit Catholic Cemetery and Columbarium. All are welcome.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to John’s caregivers, Deirdra and her team, whose compassion and dedication brought comfort and dignity to his final years.
