Austin man charged with mail theft, accused of stealing dozens of packages

The Bee Cave Police Department arrested a 28-year-old man accused of stealing “more than 30 packages” and mail.
Anthony Zarate, 28, is facing multiple charges: Mail theft, a 2nd degree felony, fraudulent use of identifying information and unlawful possession of a criminal instrument, which are both state jail felonies.

Officers received multiple reports of mailbox theft in the Falconhead subdivision on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8, said Bee Caves Police. This prompted the department to investigate the case.

On Tuesday, a Bee Cave Police officer pulled over a driver in a vehicle that matched the description seen on surveillance cameras. During the stop, officers saw “several packages inside the vehicle that were not addressed to the driver,” the department said.

After further investigation, police believe Zarate illegally obtained mailboxes in subdivisions across Travis County and stole more than 30 packages.

Bee Cave Police is working with the United States Postal Service (USPS) to ensure all recovered packages are returned to owners before Christmas.

Police reminded the public to take precautions to reduce the risk of package theft. Some precautions are to have packages sent to your work address, use tracking to determine when packages will arrive and retrieve them as soon as possible.
