WHITESTOWN, Ind. (WXIN) – A woman died following a shooting at an Indiana neighborhood in what appeared to be a case of mistaken identity, according to police in Whitestown.
The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department reported that early Wednesday morning they responded to a reported shooting and found a woman dead on the porch of a home. Officers said it appeared a shot had been fired from inside, with a bullet hole spotted in the front door.
Initially, police were told the incident was a home invasion but after further investigation WMPD said in a statement, “the facts gathered do not support that a residential entry occurred.” It appears the woman was part of a cleaning crew who had arrived at the wrong address, police said.

The woman was already dead when police arrived, according to WMPD.
Several people were reported to have been in the home when the shooting happened and a firearm was recovered from the scene, officers said.
A man, also part of the cleaning crew, was on the porch with the victim when police arrived.

Police said the investigation was still in its early stages Wednesday as investigators continued to question several people. The department did not release additional information about a possible suspect, as investigators were still trying to understand the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
WMPD reiterated that no evidence leads them to believe the woman actually entered the home.
Whitestown police asked the community to “trust in their investigative process and refrain from sharing unverified information.”
