How dry has this autumn been?

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It’s been a dry fall so far.

As dry conditions continue, Meteorologist Scot Mundt will be watching the rain gauge as the month of November goes on.

As we go through the last month of meteorological autumn, I’ll be paying close attention to how much precipitation we’ll receive as we go through the month. And for good reason, as Sioux Falls is currently at just under an inch for total precipitation for September and October combined.

This graphic shows the top ten for driest autumns on record in Sioux Falls. IF Sioux Falls does not get measurable precipitation in November, it will finish as second driest autumn on record. Keep in mind, November averages around an inch and a quarter of liquid precipitation.

This next graphic highlights a couple of those years as I looked at what happened during the snow season.

Three of those years ended up in the top ten for the least amount of snow but 1955-56 ended up at the 13th heaviest for snow after finishing 9th for the driest autumn on record.

We’ll add to our autumn precipitation on Saturday and there are indications of more precip on the way for the second half of the month. We’ll just have to wait and see how much.
