Voting begins for MLB All-Star Game 2025: Will fans end Tigers’ 10-year drought?

CHICAGO — Will this be the summer fans help the Detroit Tigers break a decade-long dry spell?

Miguel Cabrera was the last Tigers player elected to the All-Star Game by fans, back in 2015. Since then, all Tigers All-Stars have been selected by players or the league.

The league released its fan ballot on Wednesday for the July 15 game in Atlanta.

The Tigers have no shortage of compelling candidates, including catcher Dillon Dingler; first baseman Spencer Torkelson; second baseman Gleyber Torres; and outfielders Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter.

Shortstop Trey Sweeney, third baseman Zach McKinstry, designated hitter Colt Keith, and outfielder Javier Báez are also on the ballot.

The All-Star teams are selected through a three-prong system:

  • First, fans vote for the starting lineup in two phases.
  • Next, the players’ ballot fills 17 more AL spots (nine reserve players, five starting pitchers and three relievers).
  • Finally, the commissioner’s office selects six more players to finalize the roster while ensuring each team has at least one representative.

Even if the Tigers strike out in the fan vote, they seem likely to have at least one guaranteed selection on the pitching staff in reigning Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.

Greene, who was selected by his peers in 2024, has also made a strong case to repeat in 2025.

TIGERS’ ALL-STARS THROUGH THE YEARS

2024: LHP Tarik Skubal, OF Riley Greene (selected by players)

2023: RHP Michael Lorenzen (MLB selection)

2022: DH Miguel Cabrera (special commissioner selection); LHP Gregory Soto (MLB selection)

2016: Miguel Cabrera (selected by players)

2015: INF Miguel Cabrera (elected as starter by fans, but did not participate due to injury); INF Jose Iglesias, OF J.D. Martinez, LHP David Price (selected by players).
