SUN VALLEY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — An elderly man died and two police officers were injured after a violent car crash in Sun Valley, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The crash happened at around 1:57 p.m. near the intersection of Saticoy Street and Cleon Avenue.
According to the LAPD, the officers were responding to a domestic abuse restraining order call when they collided with the gray Honda.
LAPD said the unit was in Code 3, which means it had its lights and sirens on before the crash.
“A vehicle pulled in front of them to make a left turn. They struck that vehicle on the driver’s side,” said Detective Megan Aguilar with the LAPD.
Firefighters had to extricate the victim, identified only as a 70-year-old male, who was trapped in the car. They tried to render aid to the victim, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two officers, both 24 years old, were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
AIR7 video showed the LAPD cruiser involved in the crash with front-end damage and the airbags deployed inside. The victim’s gray sedan also had major front-end damage.
Police said the patrol unit has a dash camera and it would have been rolling as soon as they went Code 3. That will play a big role in the ongoing crash investigation, they said.
