Tongogara Monument set for commissioning

THE late General Josiah Magama Tongogara Monument and Health Centre in neighboring Mozambique is now ready for commissioning, with preparations having reached an advanced stage.

The Josiah Magama Tongogara Memorial Site in Mozambique is located in Magacaia Village, Massinga District, in the Inhambane Province.

It is a cenotaph marking the exact crash site where the late Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) Commander died in a car accident on December 26, 1979.

At a post-cabinet briefing Tuesday, Information Minister Soda Zhemu said construction of the centre has been completed.

“The nation is being informed that construction at the Centre has since been completed, including an Outpatient Block; three Staff Quarters and a Maternity Block which were constructed by the Government of Zimbabwe, while the Government of Mozambique constructed an Administration Block; a Waiting Mothers’ Shelter; and a Laundry Facility.

“The Project is ready for commissioning, and the amenities are expected to transform the livelihoods of the local Mozambican communities which assisted during Zimbabwe’s War of Liberation, through access to a modern health facility,” he said

The construction of the Monument and the Health Centre are part of continuing efforts to recognize and immortalize the immense contribution of the late General.
