New ZiG bank noted enter circulation on Tuesday: central bank

HARARE – The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe will on Tuesday begin circulating a new series of upgraded ZiG banknotes, governor John Mushayavanhu announced.

The BiG5 ZiG banknote series, introduced under Statutory Instrument 37 of 2026, will enter circulation starting with the ZiG10 and ZiG20 denominations, alongside a newly issued ZiG50 note. Higher denominations – the ZiG100 and ZiG200 – will follow gradually, guided by transactional demand and prevailing monetary and financial conditions.

Individuals will be able to withdraw up to ZiG10,000 per week, while corporates will access up to ZiG100,000 per week.

The new notes will be available through banking halls, ATMs and HomeLink kiosks. The Reserve Bank has also encouraged supermarkets, pharmacies and hardware shops to offer ZiG cashback facilities, and urged mobile money operators to resume cash-in and cash-out provisions in ZiG.

The old ZiG banknote series will continue to co-circulate with the new notes indefinitely, and will be phased out naturally as they are deposited into the banking system.

ZiG coins, introduced in April 2024, will also remain in circulation to support small-value transactions.

The rollout follows a nationwide ZiG educational and awareness campaign conducted by the Reserve Bank throughout March 2026.
