PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says his administration is working to double Zambia’s economy post the August 13, general elections.
Mr Hichilema, said, however, this is “God willing, courtesy of the people of Zambia”.
“We want to grow the economy and double it. With our decision now, God willing, courtesy of the people of Zambia, post 13 August 2026, this year, God’s will, courtesy of the people of Zambia, we are in sight to more than double this economy,” he said.
The President said this when he graced the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) national delivery day at Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
The PDU was established in March 2023 to accelerate the delivery of the presidential priorities and improve Zambians’ living standards through measurable result.
Mr Hichilema said during the PDU day that the unit’s establishment is in line with government’s desire to enhance service delivery and further grow the economy.
He said going forward, government wants provinces to use their natural endowments and comparative advantage to grow their local economies and help grow the national economy.
Zambia’s economy grew by 4.5% in the first quarter of 2025, recovering from a slower pace in 2024, despite challenges from drought and low electricity supply.
The International Monetary Fund has projected that Zambia’s economy will grow by 6.2 percent this year.
It is the President’s desire to double this projection.
“We need the mind-set to change then drive the regional economy and these provinces will contribute significantly to this growth agenda. The endowments are there”.
“And we will provoke regions that are in comatose, a number of regions in our country can do better and contribute to the economy, we will target each region now, what Luapula can give us is a lot more than what Luapula is doing now”.
