POLICE have recorded a road traffic accident in which a police officer died while musician sustained serious injuries.
The accident occurred yesterday, February 14, 2026, around 16:40 hours in the Machinga area, about 12 kilometres south of Monze town.
According to preliminary investigations, the accident occurred when the driver of a Toyota Lexus improperly attempted to overtake a truck, resulting in a head-on collision with an oncoming Toyota Axio that had the right of way.
In a statement, police spokesperson said the accident involved two motor vehicles: a Toyota Lexus, registration number BLD 3803ZM, and a Toyota Axio, registration number BAD 7178.
Mr Chilabi said the Toyota Lexus was driven by Benjamin Phiri, 42, of Lilayi in Lusaka, who was driving towards Chisekesi at the time of the accident.
He said Mr Phiri sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to Monze Mission Hospital.
Mr Chilabi said a passenger in the Lexus, David Banda, 45, of Silverest Area in Lusaka, popularly known as General Ozzy,also sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to Monze Mission Hospital.
Mr Chilabi said the Toyota Axio was driven by Michael Nyirenda, 55, a police officer of Site and Service Compound in Monze District.
He said the officer sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot.
“The body of the deceased has been deposited at Monze Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination,” he said.
Mr Chilabi said a passenger in the Toyota Axio, Mwiya Munalula, 45, a police officer of Manungu Residential Area in Monze District, sustained minor injuries.
He said Ms Munalula was treated and later discharged from Monze Mission Hospital.
“Both vehicles were extensively damaged,” Mr Chilabi said.
