Police Hunt 29 Inmates Who Escaped Kapiri Mposhi Cells

TEN people died and five others were injured in separate road traffic accidents recorded across Zambia on Saturday, June 13, 2026, police have said.

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the accidents occurred in Eastern, Copperbelt, Central, Lusaka and Southern provinces, with speeding and improper overtaking among the main causes.

In Chipata District, Eastern Province, a juvenile died after being hit by a Toyota Dyna, registration ARB 5499, along Great East Road at Madzimoyo Market. Chilabi said driver Frank Phiri, 34, allegedly lost control due to excessive speed.

On the Copperbelt, along Ndola-Kitwe Road, an unidentified male cyclist aged 30-40 died after being hit by a Mitsubishi Rosa bus, registration ACM 3486, driven by Geoffrey Mwamba, 47, of Kitwe.

In Central Province, at Chalata Area along Great North Road in Mkushi District, a Toyota Land Cruiser, registration BBA 9823, collided head-on with a FAW truck and trailer, registrations T249ECV/T949EUC. Chilabi said the truck driver, Harry Hamand Matanga, 32, of Tanzania, allegedly executed an improper overtaking manoeuvre. The Land Cruiser driver, Jackson Hilajalia of Lusaka, died at Mkushi District Hospital. One passenger and the truck driver were injured.

In Chisamba District, near Golden Valley along Great North Road, an unidentified male pedestrian aged 25-30 died in a hit-and-run.

In Lusaka, two fatalities were recorded: Jimmy Ngulube, 27, died after losing control of a Toyota IST, registration AID 1648, along Garden Road; and Mvula Nkula, 35, died after being hit by a Toyota Crown, registration BLD 2143, while crossing Mungwi Road near Quality Fuelling Station.

In Chongwe District, at Mpango Junction, two Volvo trucks, registrations ARC 307 and ABC 3094, collided head-on after the driver of ARC 307 allegedly attempted an improper overtaking manoeuvre. The ARC 307 driver and two passengers died on the spot. The ABC 3094 driver was injured.

In Southern Province, at Ngabo Road Junction, 18km east of Namwala, Casewell Mudenda, 41, died after his motorcycle collided with a Mercedes-Benz truck, registration ALF 2995. Truck driver Darlington Hamainza, 40, of Monze, was injured.

Chilabi urged motorists to obey speed limits and avoid risky overtaking.
