A 20-year-old University of Zambia(UNZA) Great East Road campus student is nursing serious injuries after being hit by a Toyota Mark X as she was crossing the road within campus.
Zanele Sichoonga sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital while a an irate instant justice mob of suspected students pounced on the driver.
Police Public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi said in a statement the accused happened on February 7, 2026, around 03:30 hours, within UNZA Great East Campus.
“The pedestrian sustained serious injuries after being hit by a motor vehicle and was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, where she is currently admitted and receiving medical treatment,” Mr Chilabi said.
He names the driver of the Toyota Mark X, registration number CAG 1877, as Stephen Lombe, aged 29, of Chamba Valley.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the pedestrian was crossing the road and was hit by an oncoming motor vehicle
“Following the accident, a group of suspected students allegedly mobbed and assaulted the driver and damaged the motor vehicle.
“Police officers rushed to the scene and rescued the driver from the mob. He sustained injuries and was taken to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, where he was treated and later discharged,” Mr Chilabi said.
And the Zambia Police Service has dismissed as false information circulating on social media alleging that the driver involved in this accident is the son of the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Honourable Jack Mwiimbu.
Mr Chilabi sia father information is false, malicious, and misleading.
“There is no relationship between the driver and the Minister.
The Service strongly condemns the deliberate spread of malicious falsehood and and urges members of the public to disregard these false claims,” he said.
Police investigations are ongoing, and the driver is awaiting formal charges.
