GOVERNMENT says it is committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation in youth development, sport and the creative sector with Japan.
Speaking during a courtesy call on Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, Japanese Ambassador to Zambia, Mikami Akiteru, said Japan appreciates the long-standing relations between the two countries, anchored on a shared commitment to expanding collaboration in arts, sport and youth empowerment programmes.
Ambassador Mikami said Japan remains committed to strengthening ties with Zambia, noting that his predecessor laid a solid foundation for cooperation with the Ministry.
He added that Japan has continued to support local initiatives, including judo tournaments and arts festivals, and is keen to deepen engagement in these areas.
“I may not be a career diplomat, but I come with government experience and a strong determination to build on the already warm relations between our two countries,” he said, adding that this is his first posting on the African continent.
And Mr Nkandu expressed appreciation for Japan’s continued support, describing the Asian nation as a reliable partner in various sectors, including the creative industry.
He said it is important to appreciate the knowledge transfer and lessons from Japan’s development trajectory, particularly in areas such as sports technology and innovation.
The Minister further highlighted opportunities for collaboration in infrastructure development and sport science, noting Japan’s global advancement in these fields.
He said Zambia stands to benefit from exchange programmes aimed at enhancing local expertise.
“In the arts sector, Government is exploring partnerships around the establishment and enhancement of facilities such as an arts gallery in Livingstone, while also inviting Japanese participation in this year’s Creative Business Summit,” Mr Nkandu said.
