A one-year-eight-month-old child has died in a road traffic accident that occurred in George Township, Lusaka.
The toddler, identified as Monica Banda, was killed in George Compound’s Sililo area.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the incident was among three fatal road traffic accidents and seven serious injuries recorded from separate crashes that occurred on January 17, 2026, in Lusaka and Chilanga districts.
“The fatal accidents involved both pedestrians and passengers. A one-year-eight-month-old child, Monica Banda, was killed in George Compound, Sililo area, Lusaka. Another pedestrian, Mathias Sakala, aged 47, lost his life along Garden Road near Fred Joe Limited in Lusaka,” Mr Chilabi said.
He said a male passenger, Sililo Munalula, aged 49, also died following a collision between a Toyota Noah and a Mitsubishi Canter along Kafue Road near the Chilanga District Council junction.
Mr Chilabi said the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital mortuary, pending post-mortem examinations.
In addition to the fatalities, several serious accidents involving pedestrians were recorded at various locations.
He said Given Otare, aged 49, Eric Ilunga and Javes Banda, aged 35, were injured at the Kutwa and Musonda Ngosa Road junction. Abraham Kalaluka, aged 38, sustained injuries on Ben Bella Road, while Siyanga Mulemwa, aged 35, was injured near Mumbwa Road at the Mbasela Junction.
Others injured include Violet Tembo, aged 37, along Great North Road near the Lake Petroleum filling station, and Mercy Zulu, aged 34, on Garden Road in Lusaka.
Mr Chilabi said all the injured persons were rushed to various health facilities for medical attention.
“All vehicles involved have been impounded for re-examination, and drivers suspected of negligence are in police custody pending investigations,” he said.
Mr Chilabi cautioned road users to exercise extra caution, obey traffic regulations, avoid speeding and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol.
He further urged pedestrians to use designated crossing points and remain vigilant.
