INSPECTOR General of Police Graphel Musamba said that police will not tolerate lawlessness before, during or after Zambia’s Aug. 13 general election.
Musamba directed police commanders nationwide to act firmly, professionally and impartially against perpetrators of political violence and public disorder. He said anyone found inciting violence, damaging property or disturbing public peace would be arrested and prosecuted.
“Political violence, particularly during an election period, poses a serious threat to Zambia’s democratic governance, national unity, economic stability, and international reputation,” he said.
The police service has activated an Electoral Security Plan focused on preventing violence through proactive policing, intelligence gathering and timely interventions, Musamba said.
He warned political party cadres, pressure groups and individuals that there would be “zero tolerance” for violence, intimidation and incitement, and urged the public and political leaders to report suspicious activities to authorities.
