Female fuel attendant brutally murdered another critical after attack at filling station

Unknown criminals are on the run after brutally attacking a fuel attendant and murdering another at Rubis Service Station in Lusaka’s Hellen Kaunda area.

The incident occurred in the early hours of today around 03:00 hours, when the attendants were ambushed and violently assaulted by an unknown number of suspects believed to have been armed with unidentified weapons.

Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said one of the attendants, Sibeso Akaliwa, sustained severe head injuries inflicted with an unknown object and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital.

He said another attendant, Mapalo Mwelwa, survived the attack but sustained multiple head injuries.

Mr Hamoonga said Mr Mwelwa is currently battling for his life in critical condition at the same hospital.

“The two were reportedly locked inside the service office during the attack. Fortunately, a third employee, Charity Mwaleishi, aged 19, a cashier who was asleep in the adjoining shop office, was unharmed and reportedly did not hear the incident unfold,” Mr Hamoonga said.

He added that two security guards from White Hat Security Company, only known as Boniface and Lungu, were not present at the time of the attack and could not be located when the station manager arrived at the scene.

“Police officers swiftly responded, conducted a thorough inspection, and documented evidence. The office door leading to the safe had been forcibly opened in an attempt to rescue the victims,” Mr Hamoonga said.

He said while the safe showed signs of tampering, preliminary findings suggest that no money was stolen from it.

Mr Hamoonga said an undisclosed amount of daily sales, believed to have been in the custody of the victims, is missing.

He said no arrests have been made, and no property has been recovered.

“Investigations are actively underway, and efforts are being intensified to apprehend the perpetrators involved in this heinous crime. We appeal to members of the public who may have any information that could assist in the investigations to come forward and report to the nearest police station,” Mr Hamoonga said.
