VT12 Million Climate Project to Protect Ahkamb, Makira and Erromango

Three islands , Ahkamb in South Malekula, Makira in the Shepherds, and Erromango in Tafea , will receive a VT12 million project to help their communities adapt to the impacts of climate change.

On Ahkamb, the community will build a sea wall using gabion baskets and plant trees along the coastline to reduce the impact of coastal erosion and natural disasters.

On Makira, the community will relocate further inland to avoid rising sea levels.

Meanwhile, on Erromango, a multi-purpose community hall will be built to serve as an evacuation center during disasters.

Implementation of these projects will begin early next year.

The funding comes through the Community Climate Adaptation Facility, led by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility.
