Chiefs from South and South East Tanna have backed the Government’s decision to take Vanuatu’s sovereignty claim over Matthew and Hunter Islands to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The endorsement came after a Government delegation, led by Finance Minister Johnny Koanapo, met with chiefs at Ianmirai Nakamal to seek their views and blessing before the case proceeds.

Minister Koanapo briefed the chiefs on the outcome of the recent negotiations with France in Paris, saying both sides maintained their claims over the islands and were unable to reach an agreement.

“Vanuatu’s position was clear. We could not agree to draw a maritime boundary unless France first recognised that Matthew and Hunter belong to Vanuatu. France also stood firm that the islands belong to them, so no agreement was reached.”

He told the chiefs that the Council of Ministers has now agreed to pursue the matter through the International Court of Justice.

“The Government has decided to take another path by bringing the case before the ICJ. It will not be an easy fight. It will cost money, and there is no guarantee of success, but this is the path we have agreed to take.”

Following the briefing, the chiefs expressed their support for the Government’s decision and pledged to stand behind the country’s claim through prayers.

The delegation left Tanna today to continue consultations with chiefs on Futuna before travelling to Aneityum, where they will seek further support and views from traditional leaders before the Government advances its case.
