PVCC Launches Earthquake Remembrance Week Ahead of December 17

Port Vila City Council (PVCC) officially launched the commemoration program yesterday, 11 December, to honour the lives lost during the 17 December earthquake.

The official launch marks the beginning of a week dedicated to remembering those who died and also reflects the city’s commitment to rebuilding Port Vila for the future.

The ceremony took place at the Port Vila City Council chamber.

This is the first time Port Vila City Council will hold an earthquake commemoration, following the deaths of families during the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Port Vila on 17 December.

VBTC News was at the council chamber to witness the official launch of the remembrance program.

Acting Clerk of PVCC, Avio Roberts, said there are three main themes for the special day.
“Firstly, it is to honour the lives that are lost, honour the families that are still affected by this, and also the resilience of the people. Secondly, how to rebuild the Port Vila of tomorrow.”

He added that 17 December will be marked every year in the city.
“Maybe it will not be a public holiday, but it will be a commemoration day on an annual basis.”

The official launch also included the announcement of a one-week cleanup campaign, starting today, 11 December, and running until next Tuesday ahead of 17 December.

Orient Entertainment, in collaboration with Port Vila City Council, launched the official program for the 2025 Earthquake Remembrance Day.
