The New Zealand Government has committed VT 43.1 million to rebuild and upgrade the Handicraft Market House area near Feletoa Park, partnering with Fletcher Organisation Vanuatu to deliver the works.
A signing ceremony took place today between New Zealand and Fletcher, marking the start of the latest phase of improvements to the Port Vila seafront. The project will include:
- Replacing the Natangora roofing on the handicraft market
- Renewing coral and sand areas along the beachfront
- Rebuilding wooden benches and outdoor furniture
- Improving car-parking areas
- Addressing trip hazards to make the area safer and more accessible
New Zealand High Commissioner Nicola (Nicci) Simmonds said the refurbishment is an important investment to improve the Port Vila waterfront, making the seafront safer, enjoyable, and accessible for both locals and tourists. She highlighted that the work will support tourism growth, economic activity, and strengthen cooperation with the Port Vila City Council.
Port Vila Lady Mayor also praised the New Zealand Government for its continuous support to the country and urged the public to respect and take care of infrastructure built with donor assistance.
Part of Long-Term Support to Port Vila Waterfront
This new phase follows a series of major New Zealand–funded investments and repair works:
- After Tropical Cyclone Pam (Category 5), New Zealand funded major development of the seafront, including the 1.2km promenade, market houses, playgrounds, seawall rehabilitation, and coastal protection.
- After Cyclones Judy and Kevin, New Zealand supported repair works to the promenade.
- Following the December 2024 earthquake, New Zealand contracted Fletcher Organisation Vanuatu to repair parts of the walkway, seawall, and jetty structures.
The latest upgrade delivered through Fletcher Organisation Vanuatu forms part of New Zealand’s broader support for Vanuatu’s earthquake recovery and economic development, bringing the total post-earthquake seafront works to VT 43.1 million (NZD 625,000).
