New Toilets Bring Relief and Dignity to Students of Ecole Publique de Centre Ville

Ecole Publique de Centre Ville has officially handed over two newly constructed semi-permanent ablution blocks for students, marking a significant milestone in restoring safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities following the 17 December 2024 earthquake.

From a press release it states that the devastating earthquake caused widespread damage to education infrastructure across Efate and surrounding islands, leaving many schools without functional toilets and safe water access. With urgent action required to reopen schools for the 2025 academic year, UNICEF, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), stepped in to provide immediate solutions. Portable toilets were installed, while longer-term repairs and new facilities were planned and constructed.

Now, thanks to financial and technical support from UNICEF and the Government of Australia, 409 boys and 408 girls at Ecole Publique de Centre Ville are using modern, safe, and hygienic toilets, ensuring a healthier and more dignified learning environment.

“I feel really happy to use the new toilets because they are clean and safe. It makes coming to school much better,” said Hortense, a Year 8 student.

The Director of Education Services at MoET, Mrs Nanise Lapi, acknowledged the partnership’s impact, saying:

“On behalf of the Ministry, I thank UNICEF and the Government of Australia for standing with us in our recovery efforts. These new facilities are not only essential for hygiene and health but also for ensuring students’ learning and attendance.”

UNICEF WASH Specialist, Mr Brecht Mommen, added:

“Every child deserves a safe place to learn, and that includes access to clean water and proper sanitation. WASH facilities help prevent illness, keep children—especially girls—in school, and create an environment where learning can truly thrive.”

The Ministry of Education and Training, together with development partners, communities, and schools, reaffirmed its commitment to the Vanuatu National Sustainable Development Plan 2016–2030, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve access, quality, and management within the country’s education system.
