Excavation work is currently underway near the waterfall area at Fatumaru Bay in Port Vila, as part of efforts to create more space for local businesses.
The development, which began along the waterfall site, is expected to extend behind existing small businesses in the area, including Pikinini Bar, and continue towards the Icon building.
Local business owner Lopez Adams says the main goal of the project is to provide more opportunities for Ni-Vanuatu entrepreneurs.
“We need more space to bring in more Ni-Vanuatu to start their own small businesses in town. We are looking at creating space for around 20 small local businesses so they can have better visibility and sell their products to tourists, visitors, and locals,” he said.
Mr Adams explained that the vision is to support economic activity while creating employment opportunities, especially following challenges faced by businesses after the 2024 earthquake.
The development comes at a time when there are ongoing public concerns about safety, particularly with excavation work taking place in coastal and elevated areas.
However, Mr Adams assured that all required processes and approvals were followed before work began.
“We have gone through all the proper processes, including permits from environment, geology and mines, and the municipality. The rock here is solid and stable, and even during the last earthquake, there were no cracks in this area,” he said.
He also highlighted plans to turn part of the site into an attraction, including activities such as cliff-based entertainment for both tourists and locals.
VBTC News understands that there have been some differences regarding land boundaries between the waterfall lease area and the Shefa Provincial Government during the development.
