The Government has announced plans to review police salaries and allowances as the Vanuatu Police Force continues implementing its new organisational structure.
The announcement was made during the presentation of a VT109.3 million cheque to fund risk allowances for 412 police officers who served on the frontline during the 17 December 2024 earthquake.
Minister of Internal Affairs Andrew Napuat said the review will ensure police salaries and allowances better reflect officers’ responsibilities, particularly when responding to high-risk situations.
“As we implement the new organisational structure within the Vanuatu Police Force, we will continue working to ensure salaries and allowances are properly aligned. We also need to clearly define what constitutes a risk situation so officers are fairly recognised for the work they undertake.”
The cheque was presented to Police Commissioner Kalshem Bongran and Police Service Commission Chairman John Taleo.
Minister Napuat said the risk allowance recognises the dangerous work police officers carried out during the earthquake response.
“In normal times, people may criticise or underestimate the work of police officers. But when you are at the scene of a disaster and witness the conditions they operate in, you truly appreciate that they are carrying out very risky tasks.”
Commissioner Kalshem Bongran thanked officers for their commitment during the national emergency, saying they responded quickly to protect lives and restore order following the earthquake.
“I want to acknowledge the work you carried out and your swift response during that difficult time. You responded to damaged structures, ensured people’s lives were protected, controlled the situation, and the entire country witnessed the scale of the operation you delivered.”
Although the payment comes more than a year after the earthquake, Commissioner Bongran thanked the Government for recognising the contribution made by police officers during the disaster response.
The 412 officers are expected to receive their risk allowance payments in their bank accounts on the next scheduled payday.
