The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu is investigating reports indicating that counterfeit polymer Vatu notes are circulating in some areas of Port Vila.
The Bank has confirmed that the notes are not genuine currency and were not issued by the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu. Key security features used to verify genuine notes, such as the design, clear window and serial numbers—do not match those of authentic Vatu currency.
The Reserve Bank says some members of the public and businesses have already identified notes that appear different or do not feel right when handled.
Passing counterfeit money is against the law, and the RBV is working with police on the situation to prevent any further spread of fake notes.
