Church Training Promotes Healthy, Violence-Free Marriages

Amid growing concerns over relationship problems and domestic violence, church leaders have taken steps to promote healthier and more respectful marriages.

A recent training was held at the Vanuatu Christian Council, aimed at equipping pastors with knowledge and tools to guide couples toward violence-free relationships.

The workshop was facilitated by Reverend Cliff Bird, Catalyst for the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme, who, together with his wife, led sessions on Gender Equality Theology.

Reverend Bird said the training focused on relationships between husbands and wives, men and women, and within families, churches, and communities — emphasizing dignity, equality, and non-violence.

He explained that the Bible provides strong guidance for building loving, compassionate, and respectful relationships. He expressed hope that using Biblical teachings and theology would help couples move toward healthier and non-violent marriages.

Elder John Paul of the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu said one key lesson discussed was the concept of mutual submission between husband and wife. He highlighted the importance of partnership in fulfilling God’s mission, with both men and women supporting each other in their respective roles.

Pastor Nena Rasu from the Church of Christ emphasized that understanding roles and responsibilities within marriage is essential to preventing separation and violence in families.

Meanwhile, Pastor John Leeman of the Seventh-day Adventist Church reminded participants that marriage is a blessing ordained by God from the beginning.
