Ambae Volcano Risk Remains at Alert Level 2

Ashfall from the volcano on Ambae Island began slowly late last week.

The Department of Meteorology and Geo-Hazards says the Manaro Volcano on Ambae remains at Alert Level 2.

The Manager of the Geo-Hazards Unit, John Junior Niroa, told VBTC News this follows ashfall activity that appeared on Monday this week.

He said the monitoring system has confirmed a small increase in gas emissions over the past few days, along with ground movement and some hot stones rising slightly to the surface.

Mr. Niroa pointed out several areas that may be at risk.

“We must also take into consideration the morphology of the volcano on Ambae. If ash continues, the cone will continue to build, so the risk areas are the river channels or the ridges in the island , the areas where lava can move. Currently, the danger zone remains Danger Zone A, which is 2 KM from the active vent. This is a reminder that even though activity can increase or decrease, we cannot predict it.”

Mr. Niroa added that the team will continue monitoring, and if any new activity occurs, they will alert communities immediately.

“The event is not a constant behaviour , some days it increases, some days it decreases. This is a reminder that volcano activity can rise or fall, but people on the island must remain cautious. The key safety measures remain: ensure daily supplies, keep food covered from ash, and be mindful if activity continues.”
